Description: Firearms remain a very politically charged issue in the US. While guns are responsible for thousands of deaths and injuries across the country, we have not treated it like the public health crisis it is. Through understanding of the epidemiology of gun injury to children and youth, coupled with a discussion of how we can open the conversation to begin to talk about guns, it is hoped that we can begin to change how we look at the problem, and craft solutions. Healthcare providers remain hesitant in many circumstances to talk with families regarding firearms in the home. Issues for gun injury for children and youth are unique compared to the adult population. While talking about guns is important, action in communities and at the policy level are necessary to effect real change
Outcome: The participant will obtain knowledge regarding strategies for regularly discussing gun injury prevention and address safe storage with families, children, and youth.
